1018 MILD STEEL is the most commonly available of the cold-rolled steels and essential blacksmith materials. Blacksmiths Depot sells carbon steel stock in round rod and square bar. It has a good combination of all of the typical traits of steel - strength, some ductility, and comparative ease of machining and hot forging. Chemically, it is very similar to A36 Hot Rolled steel, but the cold rolling process creates a better surface finish and better consistency of properties. The consistency of this forging stock makes it better for forging processes.
1095 High Carbon Steel is commonly used to forge knives. This is an old high carbon (non-stainless) steel. It is tough. 1095 is a good steel. It holds an edge relatively well and is easy to sharpen. It will rust which is why you'll find most 1095 blades have a coating however if you keep it oiled and wipe down after use.
We also have some drops of the 1045 medium carbon stock we use for making tongs. Check out all our forging metal below.
