Not all brands of spring swages are created equal. Some are made from mild steel. No matter what hardening is done to mild steel it can never be as durable as 4140. Off Center brand texturing tools and spring swages (clapper dies) for use on the power hammer, press and anvil are forged from 4140. They receive an advanced heat treating process. Other brands of spring swages have a forged piece pressed into them to make an impression. The die is then 2nd generation which make your final piece 3rd generation.Off centers spring swages are forged from computer generated die-makers. The result is crisper shapes and textures.
